Preparing your Management for an OSHA Inspection

Preparing your Management for an OSHA Inspection
OSHA conducts nearly 1000 inspection each week for reasons that keep varying. However, reports of fatalities, imminent danger, employee complaints and catastrophic events receive the most attention. What’s more, OSHA also conducts inspection in those industries that are deemed to be hazardous. This is why it is very important to plan and prepare your work site and management before a visit so as to reduce violations and create a positive impression.

Here is how you can prepare your management team for an inspection:

1.Meet with the whole team. No safety program can be entirely successful without the commitment of the management team. Since OSHA can inspect any part of your work site, it is important for the whole management team to attend an inspection.

2.Always be prepared for an inspection and find out what you can expect to be asked during an inspection. Most inspections follow a certain pattern, which start from the OSHA officer arriving and introductions being made to opening the conference, walk-through of the site, interviews with employees, reviewing of posts and records, and finally the closing conference. All information can be found on the OSHA website. Familiarizing yourself with each part of the inspection process will ensure that your management team is well prepared for it.

3.Go through all the known hazards at your workplace and make sure your management team can answer a few anticipated questions well. Find out why past incidents have occurred and what changes can be made. Make sure all employees are trained according to their individual requirements.

4.Make each manager responsible for various key areas. Designate tasks and ensure the review records, develop training material, assess the site and identify workplace hazards.
