Almost every industry, no matter how big or small, generates hazardous waste materials. And those hazardous waste are dangerous or can be potentially harmful to human health and the environment. Thus, it is very important to make sure that hazardous waste materials are trashed with care.

Hazardous wastes are categorized into following parts:
  • Reactive or Explosive: This type of waste is capable of causing an explosion or releasing poisonous fumes when it is exposed to water,air or other chemicals. Eg: Old medicinal ether and out-dated ammunition.
  • Corrosive: It can burn your skin, cause irritation in the eyes and it can even destroy living tissues if there is any contact. It is capable of corroding rubber, metals or plastic. For example; automobile battery is corrosive.
  • Intangible: These types of hazardous waste materials are highly inflammable. It can burn at or below 140o F. Eg: Unwanted gasoline.
  • Radioactive: This type of waste material can damage and destroy cells and chromosomal material in the human body and other living organisms. It can also pollute the surrounding environment.
Hazardous wastes can be in any form, solid, liquid, gaseous or sludge. It can cause injury, illness, also death and destruction of environment. And because of its potential risks, hazardous waste is treated with much care from ordinary wastes. It needs to be disposed properly and there are professionals who are trained in environmental hazardous waste services.

For the protection of people and environment from hazardous waste, HAZWOPER( Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) has been formed.
